IBM: Back To The Future
November 23, 2009 (Forbes) CIO Chat by Ed Sperling
When IBM invented virtualization back in the late 1960s, the goal was to make mainframes more efficient. Fast-forward four decades and the company is returning to its roots--mainframes and virtualization.
Why is this happening and how does IBM see the data center changing? Forbes caught up with Pat Toole, IBM's CIO, to talk about what's different and why--and how the CIO's job ultimately will be affected by these changes.

IBM could never execute on the cloud. They just do not seem to understand that cloud is open and transparent. Imagine, even today, one could not go out and get an image with a mainframe os for USD0.10 an hour like Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 for IaaS. Beyond that, there is no open source community supporting them similar to the AMI (Amazon Machine Image) community. It would be humorous to see what PaaS and SaaS cloud they could deliver and execute on. Ahh, don't tell me, a PaaS based on CICS? As far as SaaS, that is something imaginary for IBM.
