Strategic Vendor Consolidation and the Future of the Mainframe
March 1, 2006 (Tech Republic / Computer Associates)
There are now only about 10,000 mainframes left in the world.
Actually, there have never been more, yet that’s been a large enough number to be the computing cornerstone of the world economy. But, as the total power of the mainframes supporting the largest organizations on earth increases, their number is slowly decreasing.
Why is this? Consolidation. It’s natural: the fit get fitter, and one of the ways they do it is by joining together. Another way is through the departure of weaker competitors.
