The Arcati Mainframe Yearbook 2008

The independent annual guide for users of IBM mainframe systems.
Once again this year, the mainframe has clearly demonstrated that it is holding its own in an increasingly competitive marketplace – particularly among larger users. Web-enabled applications on the System z are progressing slowly but surely and, although there are some big challenges ahead, MIPS growth is looking pretty healthy overall.
Evidence of this trend comes from a number of sources, not least this year’s Arcati User Survey – an analysis of which can be found later in this book. Among this year’s findings – based on responses from 100 System z users worldwide – are that ‘new’ service-oriented technologies are continuing to find favour, and IBM’s strategy of reducing costs substantially for new workloads is clearly paying off. 41% of respondents (up from 34% last year) said they are running Java-based apps on the mainframe, and 31% (up from 23% last time) are running Linux workloads. When it comes to the core sub-systems, 68% said they are web-enabling their CICS applications and 62% said the same for DB2, though the real workhorse, IMS, lags behind at just 23%.
